Dhaka Division is one of the most important and historically significant administrative regions of Bangladesh. Located in the central part of the country, it includes the capital city, Dhaka, which serves as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the nation.
Ancient Background
The history of Dhaka dates back many centuries. Long before the Mughal era, the region was known for trade, river-based commerce, and growing settlements. Due to its strategic location near major rivers, Dhaka gradually became an important center of communication and business.
Rise During the Mughal Period
Dhaka gained major prominence during the Mughal rule in the early 17th century. In 1608, Mughal governor Islam Khan Chishti shifted the capital of Bengal from Rajmahal to Dhaka. The city was then renamed “Jahangirnagar” in honor of Emperor Jahangir.
During this period, Dhaka became famous worldwide for its high-quality muslin fabric, which was exported to different parts of Asia and Europe. The city also emerged as a major administrative and commercial hub of Bengal.
Several historic landmarks from the Mughal era still stand today, including:
- Lalbagh Fort
- Ahsan Manzil
British Colonial Era
After the Battle of Plassey in 1757, British colonial rule began in Bengal. Although Dhaka temporarily lost some political importance, it remained influential in education, culture, and regional trade.
In 1905, during the Partition of Bengal, Dhaka became the capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam, increasing its administrative significance once again.
Pakistan Period and Independence of Bangladesh
Following the partition of India in 1947, Dhaka became the capital of East Pakistan. Over the next two decades, the city played a central role in political movements, cultural identity, and the struggle for autonomy.
In 1971, after the Bangladesh Liberation War, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation, and Dhaka officially became the capital of sovereign Bangladesh.
